Apple’s move to larger iPhones labeled Pro Max last year was a definite milestone for the company. Even before that there were larger Plus and Max versions, but they were never positioned as an ultimate tool, but were just a large version of a regular phone. Most importantly, they’ve never strayed that far in price from the base iPhone of their respective generation. I spent more than two weeks with the top-of-the-range iPhone 13 Pro Max and did a lot of research into the pros and cons. I made a great video on this topic, which can be found inside this article, but below I will still briefly talk about what I think about this device. After all, he has enough both pros and cons.
Is it convenient to use the new iPhone
What I definitely love about the last two generations of iPhones is the way they fit. You immediately feel that the smartphone is expensive and premium. Even though I have always preferred the more compact models and before that I used the iPhone 12 Pro, the new flagship king inspires a lot of respect in me.
It doesn’t make much sense to talk about the iPhone 13 Pro in detail. I wrote a separate article about it when it came out, and now we will not dwell on it in detail, since by and large it differs from Pro Max only in screen size and battery capacity.
True, here I can put a small plus sign of the iPhone 13 Pro Max in comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro due to its balance. I already talked about this in my first impression of the device. Due to the fact that the camera module has grown a lot, it looks just huge on a more compact body. But on a large case, it looks very harmonious. In comparison with this, it even seems that last year it was not big enough, but now it has become what it should be.
I would not want it to grow further, but now are the times that the development of the camera through software is quite difficult and you have to work with physics. That is, to increase the size of the matrix and improve the optical schemes. All this may indicate that the camera will continue to increase. It would seem, where else, but remember how we all resented the protruding camera of the iPhone 6. Only now it becomes clear how we then exaggerated the essence of the problem.
Is the cutout in the iPhone smaller?
One of the important features of the new phone relative to last year’s was its new bangs. At the presentation, Apple said that it has become smaller, and this is really true. But there is no great benefit in this. From the very beginning, I noted that if you do not know about its real reduction, it may not even be striking. It is still there, and a little more or a little less is not so important. Therefore, I can say for sure that if you were thinking about changing your phone just because of the bangs, it is better to discard this idea. As now we forget about it after an hour of use, so it will continue. Well, if you specifically pay attention to it, then it will still be found.
Camera of the new iPhone
As it usually happens, many innovations have touched the camera. In particular, the camera received a macro mode. Now she can focus at a distance of just a few centimeters. I have always been against macromodules in Android smartphones, which talked a lot about this at the presentation, showing beautiful pictures.
My dissatisfaction was caused by the fact that a separate module was allocated under the macro, which was needed more in order to say that this phone has 4 or even 5 cameras. But the module had a maximum resolution of 2 megapixels and was frankly filming so-so. In the case of the iPhone, the main super-wide-angle module is sharpened for this. He really takes high-quality, not marketing macro shots. You can also shoot a video on it, but you need to understand that the shadow from the phone greatly obscures the light. Therefore, you need to shoot with separate lighting or just outside.
The camera itself shoots perfectly. The large sensor, combined with dual stabilization (on sensor and non-optics), results in smoother videos and less blurry photos. Even the automatic night mode felt like it began to turn on later. Therefore, you can now take even better photos on the iPhone. But this does not apply to the front camera. So far, the dynamic range problem hasn’t gone away. If you shoot yourself against a cloudy sky, then with a high degree of probability it will be overexposed. And if there are bright light sources behind you, your face is more likely to be underexposed. We have to do something about this, but apparently not this time.
How iPhone cinematic mode works
But everything worked out with the “Cinema Effect” mode. You can see how it works in the video posted above, and to put it in words, that is, where to strive, but a good start.
Initially, the video is filmed with a large depth of field, and the background is blurred programmatically, understanding at what distance from the camera the object is and how much the automation does so that the rest is blurred. Due to the software nature of blur, it can be changed even after shooting, but only if the movie is small. If filmed for more than 7-10 minutes, then problems may begin. Apparently, this is due to the fact that the video needs to be processed for a long time under the changed focus.
You can even change the strength of the blur, as if you opened the aperture more on the camera. But sometimes there are mistakes. For example, I was shooting a swaying flower and its stem was blurred and the edges of the petals were uneven. With people and less angular objects, this is not a problem. This is what I had in mind above when I said that the regime has room for development. In any case, you can be sure that other manufacturers have already thought about how to copy it.
New iPhone screen
I also liked the use of a 120 Hz refresh rate on the screen. Let Android fans nod their heads condescendingly now, because smartphones on this OS have had this opportunity for several years now, but it’s not that simple.
iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max can adjust the refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. Such a wide range is not available to other devices. It turns out that if you watch YouTube videos at 30 frames per second, the conditional Samsung will still refresh the screen one and a half to two times more often, but the iPhone will not. If you are reading, then the iPhone will recalculate the picture only 10 times per second, in contrast to 45-60 times for other smartphones. And this I am talking about devices with adaptive refresh rate, of which there are not so many. The rest will simply thresh 120 frames per second, even static pictures, which means that they will drain the battery faster.
How long does a new iPhone charge last?
The battery itself began to work for a really long time. Before that, I used the iPhone 12 Pro on a regular basis, but I was dealing with its Max version and I remember how much longer it worked. Now the autonomy of the phone seems to be just endless. By the end of the day, with fairly active use, I rarely had less than 40%. That is, if you use it from time to time, then you can safely talk about two days of autonomy.
Perhaps the biggest oddity about the iPhone 13 Pro Max is that the company hasn’t given up on Lightning. It’s a great connector that I really like, but it’s USB 2.0 with its very slow data transfer rate. As a result, a very logical question arises. What to do with videos captured in ProRes, one minute of which takes up several gigabytes of phone memory. On such a wire, it will be transmitted for eternity. There is no answer to this.
Video review of the iPhone 13 Pro Max
V the above video I told a few more pros and cons of this phone, and here I tried to write as concisely as possible about what I paid attention to. This is exclusively my opinion, which cannot be considered an absolute truth. And the article itself is not a review, of which there were already many. Including on our website. Therefore, the next listing of characteristics would be just a waste of time.
If you already have such a phone, please tell us what you think of it. And most importantly, from which device you switched to it and are you satisfied with this step.
