According to the report from Famitsu for last week’s gaming hardware sales in Japan, Nintendo sold over a total of 96,708 consoles including Switch, Switch Lite, new 2DS and 3DS consoles which is 27 times more than Sony and Microsoft combined (3,575).
Below are the numbers for last weeks hardware sales (followed by lifetime sales)
- Switch – 74,858 (12,887,521)
- Switch Lite – 20,994 (2,745,515)
- PlayStation 4 – 3,411 (7,661,951)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 836 (1,743,420)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 106 (1,574,722)
- Xbox One X – 37 (20,901)
- Xbox One S – 21 (93,604)
- New 3DS LL – 20 (5,888,677)
We can see from the above numbers that Nintendo is totally crushing the console market in Japan. Microsoft barely stood a chance to compete against Sony and Nintendo. Even the 2DS consoles outsold Xbox by huge margins. And the reasons for this simple. Families can have multiple Switch consoles, a superb plethora of exclusive games, price, etc. Portability is also a huge reason why handheld consoles are more successful in Japan considering the fast-paced Japanese lifestyle.
Furthermore, recently we also saw several analysts predict that the Switch will continue to dominate the global console market even after the release of next-gen Playstation and Xbox mainly because of their limited availability due to the ongoing global health crises.
