Energy saving at home: home automation helps!

The right technology, applied in the right way, can have a major impact on the energy efficiency of homes. In this article, we want to recommend some ideas that take advantage of home automation to reduce waste and achieve good energy savings, also in favor of the environment.

Respecting the environment can provide enormous benefits to the life of the individual user, as well as – clearly – to the community. Two benefits in one fell swoop: improve your economic situation and respect the environment and the lives of others. But what are the strategies you can put into practice in everyday life? Here is a series of tips.

Energy saving with thermostats and smart valves

Firstly, as we get closer to the season winter, it is good to know how save on gas and electricity consumption for heating. The most advanced smart thermostats allow you to better manage the temperature at home, limiting the prehistoric use of “on and off” and keeping the temperature constant in order to consume much less. After a couple of years of using a smart thermostat, I have personally noticed that I have reduced energy consumption and that I have also reduced the management costs of the home by a good 30%.

Obviously the thermostat alone is not enough because it goes configured best for your needs. Tado ° e Netatmo are the industry leaders and offer, more or less, the same savings and customization options as the heating programming room by room thanks to the use of smart thermostatic valves, the functionality of monitoring the energy consumption and remote control via smartphone.

Both then offer the function of automatic adaptation with the external weather to save energy in maintaining the desired temperature and both can be controlled via virtual assistants. Alexa e Google Assistant.

The entrance price in this world does not exceed € 200/230 – obviously the cost can vary according to the number of radiators to be covered with the thermostatic valves – and it is fully repaid during use.

Smart sockets, lights and switches to increase energy savings

How many electronic devices are connected to the sockets at home? Many, perhaps too many. Managing the number of outlets turned on in your home can help reduce all of them electricity consumption resulting from the “standby” modes of TVs, microwave ovens, computers, consoles, printers and the like.

Of course, the standby consumption is low but if we add up all the devices that remain on in the house we realize that we are wasting energy. A smart plug, programmed or remotely operated, can interrupt the flow of power to devices when they are not needed.

If, for example, the TV is no longer used after 11pm until 7.30am the next morning, the smart socket can automatically close that energy passage and reactivate it when necessary. Again it is important to analyze their own routines so as to program in detail all the operations that the sockets will perform. Obviously, it is understood that through a simple voice command or through the app on the smartphone, it is possible to turn the sockets on and off manually.

A smart plug costs around € 10-12 and is usually sold in a double pack for less than 19 €, as in the case of But P100 by TP-Link.

What must be evaluated in the purchase of a smart socket is the energy absorption in order to select the right model for the energy demands of the connected devices. The socket we recommended supports a maximum load of 2300W at 10A.

A handy addition could also be a smart switches capable of allowing users to monitor and manage all the light switches in the house in real time; there are all kinds and they could help save energy in several cases, one above all when you forget a light on (if not smart like those of Philips HUE) and you are now away from home.

A floor cleaning robot to save on water and detergents

Use a robot vacuum cleaners and floor cleaners can help reduce the waste of water and detergents for daily house cleaning. In fact, the tanks of these robots are generally very small and require a minimum amount of cleaning products, certainly lower than that required by a classic hand wash.

With this we certainly do not want to urge you to always have everything cleaned automatically because, although performing, these robots do not replace the hand of man. The advice is, especially if during the week you have limited time – and time is money – to have the floor cleaning robot clean the house (with a sanitizing detergent) every two days and then intervene by hand at the weekend in order to save water and detergents. Clearly this is just an example and every need is different but the basic concept is always valid: limit waste as much as possible.

There are several robots that perform this task, even with a reduced consumption of electricity in favor of energy saving:
