According to a new report, global shipments of AirPods fell by a third in the third quarter of 2021. Figures for Apple also include Beats products, but the biggest drop is likely to have been for AirPods, as consumers expected the third-generation model. .
However, despite this drop, Apple’s dominance of the true wireless headphones (TWS) market hasn’t been dented, remaining firmly in the top spot for shipping. In fact, no other brand has come close to the Cupertino company, despite the decline. Apple saw its market share drop from 37.6% to in the third quarter 24.6%. Samsung, on the other hand, ranks second with a 12% market share.
The report states that the TWS market as a whole has grown slightly, while Apple and Beats sales dropped dramatically.
Globally, the TWS category grew by just 1.3% to 72.2 million units. That wasn’t enough to compensate for the drop in wireless headphones and wireless earbuds, which fell by 4.7% and 4.9%, respectively.
Apple has maintained its position as a global leader by selling 17.8 million units, but its shipments are down nearly a third from a year ago due to a significant drop in demand as consumers waited for third-generation devices.
Canalys, however, says that this market is expected to return to growth in the fourth quarter, both due to the release of the third generation AirPods, and thanks to the arrival of the holiday season.
